What you can do with the files

Buying a download from wallnine buys you a licence — permission to use the artwork in the ways set out below. It does not transfer the copyright, which stays with the artist or with us. The practical difference is small and worth understanding: you can print the picture for the rest of your life, and you can never pass the file on.

Every product page names the licence it is sold with, and so does your receipt. If you are not sure which one you hold, it is on the order.

Personal

PERSONAL

For your own walls. The licence almost every print is sold on.

You may

  • Print the artwork as many times as you like, at any size, for any home you live in
  • Print it at home, at a local print shop, or through any online print lab
  • Frame it, mount it, hang it, lean it against a skirting board for a year
  • Give a printed copy to somebody as a gift
  • Use it as a wallpaper on your own phone, laptop or digital picture frame

You may not

  • Selling a printed copy, or anything with the artwork on it
  • Hanging it in premises open to the public or used for business — a shop, cafe, clinic, salon, office, holiday let or staged rental listing
  • Using it in work you are paid for, including a client's interior scheme

Commercial

COMMERCIAL

For business premises and client work. Still not for resale.

You may

  • Everything the Personal licence allows
  • Hang printed copies in premises you own or run — office, cafe, hotel room, clinic, studio, shop floor
  • Use it in an interior scheme you are paid to design, for one client at a time
  • Include it in your own marketing: a website, a social post, a brochure, packaging, the inside pages of a book
  • Use it in property styling and listing photography

You may not

  • Selling the artwork itself, or any product whose main feature is the artwork
  • Listing it on a print-on-demand service, marketplace or stock library
  • Passing the file to a client — they buy their own licence, or you keep the file and supply the prints

Extended

EXTENDED

For selling printed copies. No cap on how many.

You may

  • Everything the Personal and Commercial licences allow
  • Print and sell physical copies of the artwork — as many as you like, across every product and channel, with no cap and no reporting
  • Sell products where the artwork is the main event: prints, canvases, cards, cushions, tote bags
  • Fulfil those sales through a print-on-demand partner, as long as what the buyer receives is a physical object

You may not

  • Selling, sharing or delivering the digital file itself, in any format, at any resolution, ever
  • Passing the file to a manufacturer or partner who keeps it, rather than supplying it for one print run
  • Sub-licensing it, or transferring it with the sale of a business

Never, on any licence

These hold whichever tier you bought. Breaking the first one is what ends a licence, because a file that has been passed on can't be un-passed.

  • Share, sell, lend, swap or give away the digital file — this is the one that ends a licence
  • Upload the file to a stock library, template marketplace, design-tool library, public cloud folder, forum or chat server where other people can get at it
  • Use the artwork, or any part of it, to train a machine-learning model
  • Mint the artwork as an NFT or register it on a blockchain
  • Claim you drew it, or register the copyright in it anywhere
  • Edit or recolour it and present the result as your own design
  • Use it in anything unlawful, defamatory, hateful or pornographic, or on anything that could be mistaken for an endorsement by us

How long it lasts

A licence is perpetual, worldwide and non-exclusive. Perpetual means it doesn't run out — nothing you have printed stops being licensed later, and retiring a print from the shop does not revoke the licences already sold. Non-exclusive means other people are licensed the same artwork: you are buying a print, not the rights to a picture.

Two things end it, and neither is time passing. Breaking the terms ends it automatically, as set out further down. And a refund ends it: if we give the money back, the permission goes back with it and the download links are switched off — the whole bargain is set out on refunds.

It is granted to one person or one business — the one that paid. It can't be transferred, sold on, passed to a company that buys yours, or shared across a group. If somebody else needs the file, they buy their own; the prints are priced so that is a reasonable answer rather than an insult.

Attribution

Not required. You are welcome to credit us and we are always glad of it, but no licence depends on it.

Upgrading

You can move up a tier at any time by paying the difference. Email hello@wallnine.co with your order number and the tier you need and we will send an upgrade link. An upgrade covers the same artwork going forward; it does not retrospectively license something already done under a narrower tier.

Need an exclusive, or something the tiers don't cover — a national campaign, a licence in somebody else's name, or the file itself for a project? Write to us. Those are real conversations, and we would much rather have one than have you guess.

If a licence is broken

A licence ends automatically if its terms are broken, and once it has ended, continuing to use the artwork is copyright infringement. In practice we would far rather send an email than a letter: if you have got something wrong, tell us and we will sort out the right licence.

What we promise about the files

We own, or are licensed to sell, everything in the shop, and we grant these rights on that basis. Files are supplied as they are, at the resolution and in the formats each listing states — and if one is faulty, corrupt or not what the listing described, that is covered by our refund policy and by your statutory rights, both of which sit outside this licence.

We can't promise a particular result from a particular printer. Paper, ink, lab and screen calibration all change what comes out and none of them are ours — delivery & files has our honest advice on getting a good print.

Questions

If your use isn't obviously described above, ask before you print rather than after. Email hello@wallnine.co and describe what you want to do in a sentence. We answer in plain English and we have never charged anybody for asking.

This page forms part of our terms. Where the two disagree, the licence recorded on your order is the one that applies to your purchase.
